Time Management Tips From the Pros

Time management can be hard to learn, especially if you procrastinate, but it is an achievable goal if you learn some tips and apply them to your life. It’s also a good idea to learn why we feel like we don’t have enough time so we can better solve the problem.

A reason why we feel like we don’t have enough time in our lives is because of the lack of unforgettable occasions in our lives. This was expressed by Psychologist William James “in his 1890 text Principles of Psychology, [he] wrote that as we age, time seems to speed up because adulthood is accompanied by fewer and fewer memorable events. When the passage of time is measured by “firsts” (first kiss, first day of school, first family vacation), the lack of new experiences in adulthood… causes “the days and weeks [to] smooth themselves out…and the years grow hollow and collapse.” ” Another thing that has to do with the “why” of the feeling of loss of time is that, “There are two types of time: clock time and real time. In clock time… time passes equally. When someone turns 50, they are exactly 50 years old, no more or no less. In real time, all time is relative. Time flies or drags depending on what you’re doing.” Since we know why we feel the way we do about time passing, we can figure out how to change it.

There are multiple ways or steps you can take to better manage your time and become more productive. Recent research has shown that, “By learning and enhancing the traits of hardiness, we are far better able to cope with feeling overwhelmed and much less likely to feel overcome by stress.” Hardiness, by definition, means, “the ability to endure difficult conditions,” so by being hardy it helps us be more resilient to the curveballs that life throws at us. A second was to be more focused is to, “Schedule time for interruptions. Plan time to be pulled away from what you’re doing.” By scheduling time to take a break, it actually helps you be more productive because you aren’t doing the same thing for such a long period of time.

There are things that you should do, and things that shouldn’t you do to help you be more productive. There are some people that the way to be more productive is to multitask, but others say that, “Multitasking is not useful at work and definitely not useful when the task is important[.]” Another thing that you should avoid doing is procrastinating. We need to, “Stop waiting for perfect conditions to launch a great project. [Because] Immediate action fuels a positive feedback loop that drives even more action.” A technique that works for one person may not be helpful to you, so you should see what works with what you need personally. There are multiple ways that can help you to become a better manager of your time, but the best way is to customize these tips to your situation and to start on the small things; try one tip at a time to see what works.
