Hours turned into minutes then turned into seconds for the high school ballroom dancers around Utah. All of this waiting started the night before for our favorite Westlake ballroom dancers. Our team stayed after school untill 11pm setting up for UBEA–the state championship. Fast forward to the day of: the smell of hairspray and the drowsiness of all the dancers fills the air as all the teams file into our Gym. The first event started at 8:30 am and the dancers anxiously waited for their heat to go. The day was full of anxiety and pressure from others to see if they made it to the next round or to see if they placed in a final.

Everyone made sure their costumes were in place and made sure they are the best in their division. Whitney Olsen asked “can someone get this glue out of my hair” before she competes her next event or Jessica Kern yelling “Son of a samba” amongst more of what you could here at a ballroom competition. There is never a dull moment when you attend a ballroom event. Our very own Jacob Sims and Breanna Monson took first place in one of the events they competed in.

After the individual events we entered into the team events where instead of competing against each other they started competing with each other where the varsity team competed a Jive, Quickstep, Cha Cha, Latin Medley and a Standard Medley.  Where they took 5, 5, 4, 4, and 4 place in those 5 show dances.

As the night settled the last event of the night at 9:25 pm team match where each school took their best dancers of Waltz, Samba, Tango, Cha Cha, Quickstep, Triple swing and put them head to head. Westlake varsity ballroom took fourth place out of the 7 schools that competed in the Team match.

What was left were the people who started it the night before your JV and Varsity ballroom team ending the night saying “whatever you do do not fall asleep before this floor is up” Jody McOmber.
