On Friday, October 5th Westlake in Salt Lake, Cross Country qualified for State with the boys team coming in 3rd and the girls team coming in at 4th.
An overcast sky made for perfect running conditions, as runners in the 6A region laced their shoes in anticipation for this run. This was the race that determined who made it to State and only the first four teams could qualify.
The race consisted of 3 loops around Big Cottonwood Park, full of hills and endurance challenges, with every single runner pushing hard. The cheering spectators were located throughout the course, but the energy was at the finish line where, to the excitement of everyone, Westlake crossed, finishing loud and proud. We were going to State.
After losing the majority of the boys team to graduation this year this team consisted of fresh faces to the varsity light, including kids from all grades, as well as those who had never even ran before the year previous. However, thanks to excellent coaching from David Bowers and Adam Burrows both teams ran a strong race to qualify for the race of the year. State.
